MSGC Standing Committees
Metis Settlements General Council is responsible to support each Settlement in pursuit of self-governance through self-determination and self-reliance by ensuring that all eight have an equal opportunity to achieve the goals originally articulated in the Alberta-Metis Settlements Accord.
In pursuit of this goal, five standing committees (pillars) were created for growth and development.
Economic Development and Employment
The Finance, Economic Development and Employment Standing Committee is established to investigate and provide advice on matters of Settlement finance and business operations, design and implement programs that promote self-generated revenues and the improvement of Settlement economies.
The Committee will promote the development of major economic development ventures on-Settlement, and will encourage and support strategic investments that benefit all Métis Settlement members.
Land, Infrastructure and Housing
Settlements should provide an adequate level of essential services, shelter and safety in a cost-effective manner that creates a community in which people are proud to live and to whose success they have contributed.
The Committee will promote the effective and productive use of Settlement lands, develop and implement infrastructure strategies, and implement a housing strategy that enhances quality of life on Settlement lands.
Education and Training
Settlements need to develop a well-educated and trained membership that is capable of succeeding in Alberta’s competitive labour environment and that can improve household incomes such that members contribute positively to the health of their families and communities.
The Committee will promote the enhancement of public education programs available to Métis Settlement youth, and will design and implement a combination of life skills and employment strategies that lead to strong, resilient Métis Settlement Members.
Community Development and Social Development
Healthy communities are communities in which members care about and support one another and in which members are aligned by a common set of values and traditions that support the societal norms needed to build resilient communities.
The Committee will promote the design and implementation of social programs and services that develop community leaders with the discipline, confidence, self-esteem and motivation to succeed as the Settlements become more economically integrated with the neighbouring mainstream community.
Governance and Central Institutions
A stable, accountable and transparent governance system consisting of high performing institutions will maximize the potential benefits to Settlement members and their communities.
The Governance Standing Committee is established to ensure that proper and effective strategic planning, decision-making, controls and accountabilities are in place for transparency and performance as a Metis self government.
The Committee will promote effective governance policies and practices, and will be responsible to create the processes and structures to support an effective and efficient system at both the collective and individual Settlement level.
