The Metis Settlements Land Registry was established on November 1, 1990 to protect, secure and maintain the records and registered interests in Metis settlements lands. The eight Metis Settlements are areas of land that were set aside for the Metis people. These lands were set aside under the authority of the Metis Betterment Act 1939. For more information visit their website at http://www.mslr.gov.ab.ca/
The Metis Settlements General Council and local Settlement Councils were established in 1990 to represent Settlement members and to develop collective and local laws. The Metis Settlement Appeal Tribunal (MSAT) was also established in 1990 to act as a court-like body ruling on land, membership and other matters.
MSAT resolves disputes. Its mission is to promote self-governance, certainty, and respect within the Metis Settlements through adjudication, mediation and education. MSAT deals with land and membership disputes. MSAT also amends right of entry orders and settles compensation disputes for oil and gas activities on Settlement lands.
MSAT may resolve other matters as called for in Metis Settlements General Council Policies and local Settlement by-laws. For more information visit their website at http://www.msat.gov.ab.ca/
The office of the Métis Settlements Ombudsman (MSO) is an independent and impartial place to take complaints about the management or leadership of Alberta Métis Settlements. The MSO also exists to identify unfair or unjust complaints made against Settlement Councils and staff.
It is the mandate of the Office of the MSO to hear complaints and concerns and to deal with them in the most appropriate way. When a complaint is received, the MSO will determine if there is enough evidence to implement a review. If a review discovers that an error or irregularity occurred, the MSO works informally with those involved to try to resolve the concern and to prevent the same error from happening again.
