Under the Tripartite Work Plan, Health is defined as one of the priority areas. The objective under this work plan is: to ensure access and understanding of Health Services and Programs for Métis Settlement residents.
The identified activities to achieve the objective are:
- Facilitate on-going development ad delivery of the Métis Settlements FASD Service Network through community development.
- Participate and provide input into Provincial Strategies promoting the development of the Métis Settlements health indicators, community health profiles and services.
- To participate and provides provide input into the development of polices concerning health and wellbeing of residents of the Métis Settlements.
- Identify access and lack of access to existing programs and services related to health and wellness.
- Develop the over-all framework of policies and services related to Health and Wellbeing of the residents of Métis Settlements.
- Host the Annual Elders Health and Wellbeing conference.
- Research potential partnerships and strategies to support Métis Settlements Health Benefits.
Although there are several tasks and issues that fall within this area, some programs of interest that are currently under way within the settlements are the Residential Health Support Worker Program and the Métis Settlements FASD Service Network.
Indian Residential Schools Resolution Health Support Program (RHSP)
The RHSP was created in partnership with the Métis Settlements General Council and Health Canada.
The goals of the RHSP are:
- to ensure that eligible Former IRS Students and their immediate family member and/or support person(s), has access to an appropriate level of mental wellness support services;
- and to ensure that eligible Former IRS Students can safely address a broad spectrum of mental wellness issues related to the disclosure of childhood abuse(s).
The objectives of the IRS Resolution Health Support Program are to:
- Provide Residential Health Support Worker (RHSW) services to Former IRS Students and their immediate family member(s) and/or support person(s);
- to work in collaboration with various organizations and communities involved on work to assist the emotional well-being of Former IRS Students at the local, regional and provincial/territorial level;
- to support the emotional health and wellness of Former IRS Students and their immediate family member(s) and/or support person(s); and to assess the effectiveness of the RHSW Program.
There are currently 2 RHSW’s hired under this agreement one for the Western Settlements and another for the East:

Métis Settlements FASD Service Network (The Network)
The network was formed in partnership with the Métis Settlements General Council the Alberta FASD Cross-Ministry Committee.
The Alberta government has expanded services for people affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) by developing five more FASD Service Networks across the province including the eight Métis Settlements. These additional networks will work on prevention and helping individuals affected by FASD by providing services and supports across the lifespan.
The networks have been tasked with developing or expanding services to fill existing gaps across the lifespan and are in-line with the following areas in the FASD 10 Year Strategic Plan:
- Targeted and Indicated Prevention.
- Assessment and Diagnosis.
- Supports for Individuals and Caregivers
The intent of the Métis Settlements Service Network is to coordinate the engagement of the community to develop community-based, culturally relevant, multifaceted approaches to FASD targeted prevention, assessment and diagnosis, and support to individuals and care givers.
For the first year the focus of the network will be to build and strengthen capacities, engage community partners, build or establish partnerships, and to create and/or build supports around FASD.
